Cardiff to Bangor
Our cycling tour through Wales began with a train ride from Southampton to Cardiff at the crack of dawn. With our bikes ready and spirits high, we set off, eager to conquer the Welsh landscapes. Little did we know the challenges that lay ahead, particularly the notorious Brecon Beacons.
Navigational mishaps were also part of our adventure. On the first day, trying to navigate our way out of Cardiff, Andy led us in what turned out to be a large circle. I remember noticing something was off and saying, "I think the river is flowing the backwards," just before we crossed the same bridge we had passed an hour earlier. Realizing we had taken a wrong turn made us both laugh, we’ll remember this for a long time to come.
But one of the most vivid memories from this trip was reaching the top of a rather daunting hill. By the time we arrived at our hotel (the Star Inn in Dylife), I was utterly exhausted. I barely managed to drag myself to the bar for a couple of Coca Colas before collapsing into bed. It was a humbling reminder of just how demanding cycling can be, especially in such rugged terrain.
Andy, ever the adventurous spirit, had a knack for finding accommodations that were slightly off our planned route and often situated on top of hills. This added an extra layer of challenge to our journey. I recall one particularly rainy day when we finally reached our B&B at the top of another steep climb. Completely drained, I found solace in a biscuit and a cup of tea while taking a hot shower, the perfect remedy for my weary body.
But despite the physical demands, we found joy in the small things. Some dinners, we indulged in dessert before main courses, a delightful way to end the day. The local people were incredibly friendly, often stopping us for a chat. Although their thick Welsh accents sometimes made it difficult to understand, their warmth and curiosity about our journey were heartwarming.
After three days of cycling, we were incredibly glad to arrive at the Menai Suspension Bridge. The sense of accomplishment and relief was palpable. This trip through Wales, with all its ups and downs, was a true test of endurance and a beautiful reminder of the joys of cycling. Each challenge we faced made the journey all the more memorable, and I wouldn’t trade those experiences for anything.
